The last quarter
Reflection Paper: The Ups and Downs of the 4th Quarter
As I sit back and look at the pages of my planner filled with crossed-out deadlines and highlighted milestones, I realize that the 4th quarter has been a journey of extremes—one that pushed me to my limits with stress, yet rewarded me with moments of pure happiness I will not soon forget.
The stress hit hard from the very start. With final exams looming over every subject, research papers due in quick succession, and a group project that seemed to grow more complex by the day, there were nights when I found myself staring at my laptop screen, coffee mug in hand, wondering if I could possibly keep up. I remember spending an entire weekend buried in textbooks for my calculus class, struggling to wrap my head around differential equations that felt like a foreign language. The pressure to maintain my grades, meet my teachers’ expectations, and also make time for my family and friends felt overwhelming at times. There were moments of self-doubt, when I questioned whether I had taken on too much or if I was truly capable of reaching the goals I had set for myself. Even small setbacks—like a low score on a practice test or a disagreement with my group members—felt like insurmountable obstacles in the heat of the moment.
But woven throughout this stressful period were threads of happiness that made every late night and difficult challenge worthwhile. One of the brightest spots was the completion of our group project for literature class. After weeks of brainstorming, drafting, and revising, we presented our analysis of a local Filipino novel to the class—and the feedback we received left us beaming with pride. Seeing how our hard work had paid off, and knowing that we had helped our classmates gain a deeper appreciation for our culture’s literature, filled me with a sense of accomplishment that no grade could ever fully capture. Beyond academics, I found joy in simple moments: sharing lunch with my friends and laughing until our sides hurt, receiving a encouraging text from my mom when I was feeling down, and even finding peace in the quiet rhythm of studying alongside my classmates in the school library, knowing we were all in this together. I also made time to join our school’s Women’s Month celebration in March, where I met inspiring female alumni who shared their own stories of overcoming challenges—their words gave me the strength to push through when things felt toughest.
Looking back, I realize that the stress and happiness of this quarter were not separate forces, but two sides of the same coin. The pressure I felt pushed me to develop better time management skills, to ask for help when I needed it, and to believe in my ability to persevere through difficulty. The moments of happiness reminded me of what matters most—connection, growth, and finding purpose in the work I do. I learned that it is possible to feel both stressed and grateful at the same time, and that challenges often lead to the most meaningful rewards.
As I close this chapter of the school year, I carry with me not just better grades or new knowledge, but a deeper understanding of myself. I know that there will be more challenging quarters ahead, but I also know that I have the resilience and support system to face them head-on. The 4th quarter may have been tough, but it has left me stronger, more confident, and more appreciative of both the struggles and the triumphs that come with growth.
